Advancing aviation from concept to operation

NATS 2040 Vision

Our Corporate Strategy sets out a number of ambitious goals for 2040 that leverage a strong innovation, research and development culture to achieve breakthroughs in Air Traffic Management (ATM) for new and existing users and increase environmental performance.

Our Research & Development offering

NATS Research and Development (R&D) has a strong track record of deploying changes to the operation through large collaborative projects such as the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme and internal development activities such as the Mode S toolset, Intelligent Approach and iFACTS, which all started as projects in our R&D function.

Our ongoing activities continue to shape the future of ATM through our involvement in projects such as the Future Flight Challenge, SESAR 3 and Project Bluebird. To achieve these goals, we require a thriving ATM research culture that extends beyond our organisation to complement internal expertise with the capabilities of other organisations and academia.

imagine a future...

Where diverse aircraft integrate seamlessly, driving growth and positioning the UK as a global aviation leader.

With a highly automated, interoperable air traffic management system where human expertise and machine capabilities work in harmony.

Where sustainable aviation is a reality, with innovative technologies reducing emissions and environmental impact, ensuring flexibility, safety, and sustainability are the norms.

Our six research challenges

We are focusing our Research & Development activities around six key industry challenges to transform UK Air Traffic Management.

Promoting Future Mobility & Growth

How do we modernise UK airspace to enable a more diverse range of users and platforms and so support the growth of the aviation industry?

Delivering Cooperative & Automated ATM

How can we implement collaborative and automated ATM systems to meet increasing traffic demands and optimise airspace usage and efficiency?

Achieving ATM Net Zero

How do we support the goals of sustainable aviation and facilitate rapid action to achieve decarbonisation?

Next Generation ATM Professionals

How will the role of people in the ATM system evolve and how do we ensure we recruit, train and retain the skills we need?

Ensuring Safety & Maintaining Security

How do we continue to achieve safe performance in a highly automated and cooperative future, ensuring we are secure against evolving threats?

Increasing the Pace of Evaluation & Development
