Delivering Cooperative and Automated ATM

Delivering Cooperative & Automated ATM

Key questions

  • How can we implement collaborative and automated ATM systems to meet increasing traffic demands and optimise
    airspace usage and efficiency?
  • How do we enhance services to existing users and continue to manage increasing levels of traffic safely and efficiently?
  • What concepts and technologies will we need?
  • What role does automation and artificial intelligence (AI) play in the tools of the future?
  • How does the airspace become more dynamic and flexible?
  • How do we achieve greater collaboration across our operational stakeholders?

Why?

  • Ensuring we can operate a dynamic and flexible airspace to meet future traffic demands.
  • Understand the role that AI, automation, and autonomous systems have in the future of ATM, to identify and harness the benefits they offer.
  • Influence the development of regulatory frameworks and technical standards that promote the adoption of automation technologies whilst ensuring safety and security within the airspace.
  • Enable collaborative decision making between airlines, other Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP), airports and other stakeholders, to optimise airspace efficiency.

Core challenges

  • Develop, test and validate future concepts that exploit the latest technologies.
  • Develop the next generation of tools for controllers to support them to deliver future operational improvements, maximise network capacity, minimise flight delay and safely optimise efficiency.
  • Describe a synergy between human expertise and machine capabilities to harness the collective strengths of both for optimal performance.
  • Describe a future where all aircraft and ground systems seamlessly interact through a highly automated and interoperable digital exchange model to achieve a seamless, efficiently coordinated and resilient ATM service.
  • Identify and address the regulatory challenges to the adoption of advanced automation and greater cooperation across ATM.
