Entry level routes

Engineering

As well as hiring qualified and experienced engineers, we have two early entry routes for bringing passionate, but inexperienced people, into the business to develop their skills and expertise. The two routes are:

  1. Our Engineering Apprenticeship scheme
  2. Our Airport Engineering Technician scheme

Each of these excellent schemes is described in turn below.

Engineering Apprenticeship scheme

Our Engineering Apprenticeship Programme offers a unique opportunity to train as an operational engineer at NATS. You’ll gain hands-on experience working with the advanced systems and equipment that support Air Traffic Controllers and our customers across the UK. These systems are located at our Air Traffic Control Centres in Swanwick and Prestwick, at airports, and at various remote sites nationwide.

As an apprentice, you’ll follow a structured training and development programme designed to build your technical expertise and professional skills. You’ll take part in formal learning delivered by an external training provider, complemented by NATS’s own internal training pathway focused on Air Traffic Control Engineering.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, applying your new skills and knowledge on-the-job with support from experienced NATS engineers while also developing key interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have the knowledge, practical experience, and professional behaviours needed to begin a rewarding career as an operational engineer at NATS.

We are currently recruiting:

Airport Engineering Technician

This is an entry level role where candidates undertake formal training at their allocated airport to reach the standard of an Airport Maintenance Engineer, and subsequently an Airport Operational Engineer.

The role is built around achieving key training and competency milestones and candidates are expected to drive forward their own training plans, maintain good quality training records and act in a manner which promotes safety and protects the operational equipment.

Within this role, candidates can expect to get hands-on under supervision in the maintenance of airfield and tower equipment in addition to attending training courses back at NATS HQ or direct with manufacturers.
