This page is intended for parents, carers and teachers of young people who might be interested in learning more about the world of aviation, Air Traffic Control and future career opportunities. Here we explain how we are supporting this through our innovative 'Future Minds' programme.

What is Future Minds?

Our world is an amazing one. We want to inspire and empower young people from all backgrounds to explore the rich and exciting opportunities we experience every day that relate to aviation and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

We aim to do this through Future Minds, our programme designed to offer engaging outreach events, hands-on work experience and engaging STEM and aviation resources for young people aged 4-19.

Who is Future Minds for?

Future Minds is designed for young people aged 4-19 – primary school age up to secondary school leavers.

Our themed events, outreach activities and work experience opportunities have our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion at their heart. That’s why you’ll also see initiatives that particularly support those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

We also know that some young people may not still be in full time education but still want to explore career options – Future Minds is there for you too.

If you are over 19, or a university student or graduate, you may be best suited for our Early Careers offering.

Why is Future Minds important?

Can we help a child make the connection between an interest in nature to a career in environmental technology? Or playing with Lego or Roblox to being a mechanical or software engineer? Or a fascination with patterns to a job in data science? That’s our goal.

We love being part of an incredible industry with a huge range of roles linked to STEM skills and aviation. We want to spark interest and open eyes to these opportunities and contribute to the future of our industry by inspiring the next generation.

Reaching young people in their early years to prompt their academic decision-making and skills-building will help tackle known skills gaps and positively impact the long-term need for highly capable, diverse talent across the whole industry.

How can my child join an event?

NATS events: We plan to run dedicated in-house events several times a year, such as our popular 'Celebrating Young Women in STEM' events or our INSPIRE one day events for schools. Keep an eye on our social media or use the ‘Register interest’ form below to stay updated as events become available.

Local outreach events: We work with charities and educational establishments to support STEM awareness in communities across the UK.

STEM fairs: Find NATS at events such as The Big Bang, Ayr Show and the Royal International Air Tattoo.

Do you attend careers talks/events at schools, colleges, universities or other organisations?

We have a large number of passionate STEM Ambassadors among our colleagues. They often volunteer to support local careers fairs and events.

We highly recommend registering all requests on STEM Learning where all registered STEM Ambassadors look for opportunities to support. This will maximise your chances of achieving an exciting event.

Do you have any entry level roles available now?

We have a number of entry level options available depending on age and level of academic qualification achieved.

From our engineering apprenticeship schemes, to our ongoing recruitment for new Air Traffic Controllers, through to our award winning graduate schemes, there is plenty on offer.

Absolutely. If you’d be interested in a long-term outreach or work experience collaboration between NATS and your event or organisation, please get in touch.

We’re already working with the organisations and charities including Fantasy Wings, Urbond, STEM Learning, Jon Egging Trust, the CAA, The Institution of Engineering & Technology, Aero Space Kinross and Developing the Young Workforce.
